Description
Named for its traditional star shape and six pure white petals that encircle a pistil and 5-6 stamens, the Star of Bethlehem flower is also associated with the star cited during the birth of Jesus. Because of this biblical association, the star of Bethlehem embraces a meaning of purity, hope and happiness. Stars of Bethlehem are perennials that grow wild in the spring and summer, and are mostly native to the Mediterranean region.
According to the legend of the Star of Bethlehem, God created the Star of Bethlehem to guide the wise men to the Christ Child. Once the stars purpose was completed, God thought it was too beautiful to banish from the earth. Instead, the brilliant star burst into thousands of pieces and descended to the earth. The bits of the Star of Bethlehem gave birth to beautiful white flowers that blanketed the hillsides. They became known as the Star of Bethlehem flower.
